How much to make Wizard of Oz costumes?
How much would a dress maker charge to make the costumes for the whole cast of the Wizard of Oz. roughly 20-25 people. With Dorothy, scarecrow, tin man, lion, wizard, good witch, bad witch, and munchkins! Please help. I need a cost in rands or dollars, its for a play.
10 points to best answer!
thanks

It really depends on a variety of factors (measurements of the cast, the quality of the fabric and whether you are supplying that or not, and the quality of the costumes you desire). For simpler costumes like Dorothy and the muchkins, I would say (depending on where you live in the country) you could be looking at $10-25 per hour plus the cost of materials. The costume for the tin man is very complicated, and I would estimate that we spent at least $350 to build each of those when we did it. Our glinda was also very complicated and looked like the movie version and probably cost us $300. In total, we spent $2500 building Oz, and we have a 30,000 piece shop that we pulled most of the generic costumes from (munchkins, jitterbugs, ozians, etc). The main characters alone cost us over $1200. That does not count labor.
I would highly recommend you contact some rental places. A community theatre can usually rent these costumes for $20-50 each, and a larger costume shop may run $35-100 depending on which shop and which character you are speaking of.
